I am looking at purchasing a used Win. 70 .223 in a sporter varmint model. I would like some feed back pro or cons on this rifle how it shoots? Did it need bedding and floating to shoot well? How is the trigger for adjustment? etc.

Thanks for the replies in advance!

I have an older medium barrel "varmint" model but it's in 308. Similar to their Coyote model I suppose. For me the barrel is too light for serious target work, too heavy for walking about. It shoots well enough - about 1" with anything better than milsurp type - but the trigger was a bit of a pain to adjust. Maybe because I'm used to Remingtons, but the Winchester trigger while very simple, is much different in adjusting. Turning little nuts, tightening them up and such. Can be done without special tools, just takes a while.

Barrel was free floated OK and I notice the recoil lug was bedded. All in all an OK rifle.

    Tpoker,

There are a lot of variations of Winchester Mod. 70's in varmint configuration. I had one in .222, the Mod. 70 Varmint(HB). Anyhow, that was THE BEST, MOST ACCURATE rifle I ever owned. I don't know what all I did almost perfect with it but it was an outstanding rifle.

If you get a decent price on the .223 get it. If it doesn't work out for your sell it. It will bring what you paid back out of it.

I had a mod 70 varmit sporter in 22-250. it was the most accrate rifle i ever owned. I had it glass beded. It would only shoot flat base bullets. But it was a one hole shooter. That's one I regret gitting rid of.
