You will be lucky to find the color of stain you want. I make stains to the color I want from leather dye. In use Fiebing's leather dye, not shoe polish. There are several available: black, medium brown and other variations you mix and try till you get what you want. Try it on scrap till you get some experience. You can remove much of it with alcohol if you don't like it, and try again. Some will soak into the wood so you won't be able to remove it all. After you get what you want, put on a coat of varnish. I use water based poly satin varnish mostly.

In experimenting you will note that the color after varnishing is more intense than just the stain along. Try from time to time by wetting the work which will give you a color close to the finished varnished job.

You might want to think twice, about refinishing an antique firearm !

It's not an antique - it's a Second Generation Colt. You might try calling Henry Repeating Arms (formerly Colt Blackpowder Firearms Co.) who made the 3rd Generation "Signature Series" revolvers. Their late founder, Lou Imperato, was also instrumental in the 2nd Generation series. They're nice people and may be able to answer your question. Their phone number is (718) 499-5600.

You're welcome and please let us know what you find out. By the way, you can just call me "Spider". 7115 was my mother's maiden name. [:D]
