removing super glue from blued surface

I fixed problem on a gun with super glue containing cyanoacrylate. I used too much and before I could wipe off the excess it hardened and is stuck on the gun.

Any clues how to remove it without damaging the finish?

    Mornin' Henry~

I've had good luck using the "Oily" fingernail polish remover..doesn't evaporate as fast..After you test it on a hidden spot, just use a Q-tip to rub the glue spot after it soaks a minute or two..Don't get the tree-hugger type, you want the remover that has acetone in it..

Thanks. I did a dogpile and found out that acetone removes the glue. Will it hurt the blue finish?

I've never had it harm a factory blue, but cold blue will probably rub off..That's why you test it first!!! [:0]..[8D]

Henry- That situation has wrecked my day also. Getting it off the blued steel isn't tough but if it's on the finish of the stock, you're stuck(so to speak). At this point the previously mentioned method is the best shot I know of. Acetone is a hot solvent so you can get the nasty stuff off but you will have collateral damage depending on what the original finish is. Hope for the best etc.- Mike

My brother recently installed scope mounts on a Ruger SRH. He used super glue instead of loctight on everything that had threads. Other than that, the scope is mounted correctly and the screws haven't loosened up, so everthing is OK. I was wondering how difficult it is going to be if anything ever needs to be removed.[?]It's good to know about the oily finger nail polish remover.

    Hi Robin~

I wouldn't worry about it now..the odds are that your brother didn't remove ALL traces of an oil film..that alone will help..heating the screw/mount hairdryer hot usually breaks the bond ..if in fact the fit is oil-free,and very tight,he will find out why they call it SuperGlue!!!..[B)]

Speaking of solvents for glues, be careful and do not use vinegar or vinegar solutions on a blued finish. Vinegar solutions can remove blueing. I say this, because some glues' directions state that you can use vinegar to clean up with.
