Anyone have the fun of buying a "new" contract mag still in the wrapper, and then load snap caps (two only) and having the floorplate blow off?

I agree with perry shooter. As with any pistol, good magazines are absolutely critical. One bad day at the range due to catastrophic magazine failure such as you describe, jamming due to bad feed lips, weak spring, etc. will tell you that. Civilian police and armed forces infantry grunts will have horror stories about bad magazines as well.
Personally I would go with 1911 .45acp mags made by the likes of McCormick or Meg-Gar or other proven manufacturers. In your case, the "contract" magazine fell apart almost when it came in contact with your hand. They don't count in my mind as "the gun's manufacturer". Buy premium magazines only. Generally, the maker will stand behind them. You won't be sorry.
without possibility of return/exchange i'd have to agree with wolf. unfortunately, chalk it up as a loss and go with some other proven mags. fwiw i'm sorry about your luck
