S&W Numbers under the Yoke

I need some infor and/or education related to S&W.

As most Smith & Wesson enthusiast and collctors know how many of the older models have the serial # on the bottom of the butt (among other locations) and usuallly a matching serial # on the cylinder. However I've notice that they have a totally different number (not the serial #) on the inside of the frame under the yoke and a matching number on the inside of the yoke also.

My question is this, what does that number on the frame under the yoke and that same matching number on the inside of the yoke represent? Is that like some type of assembly code that indicates or shows that a particular frame and yoke are finished, matched and ready for further assembly or what?

I'd appreciate any enlightenment on this that could be furnished.

Thanks

They are a assembly number. Later they started to put the model and serial number there too.

    Thanks Dick (dcs shooters).

I appreciate the prompt answer to my question and confirmation of my thoughts regarding my inquiry about those numbers on the S&W revolvers.

I sort of figured that was what they were but just wanted to confirm it with someone who could definitive confirm this.

    Regards,
