Yesterday I was at the pawn shop and seen a fully hand engraved 1911. He said some guy in etown kentucky done the engraving and had died recently. The gun is on a auto-ordnance frame everything else is match stuff, bull barrel adj trigger sights, etc gun was real tight, and really caught my eye. They was asking 999.00 for it is that a fair deal, I was thinking thats what the gun cost to build minus the engraving. the frame, slide, trigger guard the whole gun has been done. Is 999. for the gun a fair price?

It's a good deal if you like it. A used garden variety 1911 in excellent condition is worth a good part of that price. If the engraving is a tacky amateurish job it could hurt it. Engraving can increase value depending on how good it it. Reputation, if any, of the engraver also effects value.

If the gun checks out and the engraving is something you like it is a good value - to you. Otherwise get a hands-on opinion of someone who can make a qualified judgement.

Auto Ordnance were NOT the best quality frames and slides SOFT easy to tighten but will not stay that way very long most likely why it was chosen to engrave. Factory engraving with a bill of sale will increase value. But private engraving unless done in a very high quality will HURT the value. IMHO over priced about $500.00 but value is in the eye of the buyer.
