Rem 700 Question

ever seen a rem 700 that was drilled and tapped on the top AND the side of the receiver? I passed up a good price on a 30-06 like that yesterday because it looked odd to me. I own a 700 sa and a la and neither of them are drilled on the side. Is that normal? The one I was looking at appeared to be pretty old. If so, what is it for? I doubt the old timers were using gangsta sights.

I am new to GB. And i would like to say WOW. Awesome site and Forum.
My question is:
I have a Rem 700 in 30-06 B6339713. I dont however know what series it is. I am wanting to put a finger hole laminate stock on it. Is there any difference between the ones offered on this site. I see that some are for short action and some are long action. Also i dont want to change out the barrel. And how difficult is this to do..

looks like you have a 700 adl in a long action caliber. boyds gun stocks is a great place for finding a stock for this. look for them on the web at boydsgunstocks.com

Awesome thanks. Also How hard of a process is this to do. I was a SSgt in the US army so i do know a little about gunsmithing. But i am far from an expert.

Also any thoughts on its worth. i paid 425.00+tax for it at a local gun auction.

I bought one through GB auction from a guy in Arizona. It was new, and fully finished, Laminated thumbhole for a Short action 700 varminter. Had to releive a little wood so it would free float the bbl. Groups remained the same. Very satisfied. Cost me just less than $200. Would do it again. I love the feel of the thumbhole and the high comb is just right for scope mount. Check out the auction site, Boyds will charge you the same or more. For about half the price you can get the same stock but you will have to do a little inleting and finish it. Good luck

It is not as easy as to remove screws, etc, etc. There will be some wood removal that needs done but with SHARP chisels and gouges it is not hard. Just pay attention and take your time. I have done several Boyds and they are the easiest to to with the least work, but some will still have to be done. Don't bubba-ize it or hack your way through.

I bought a boyds drop in, and it fit very nicely. I payed something like $130 for it in nutmeg laminate with a sling.
