Get on the CMP Garand forum, make sure you have pictures, if there are any differences in the butt plates it will be the pattern on the butt plate and will require pictures.

Another good place to look is the Garand Forum at www.jouster.com

I have looked at M1 buttplates & diagrams of supposed differences until my eyes bugged out, & still can't tell one from another. Unless you are trying to repair a CMP documented "collector grade", it's probably not worth the frustration.

Exterior, no. Interior (facing the wood) I think my SA has, well, "SA" stamped into it. Carbine fanatics will notice a difference in the groove pattern to determine the maker, but M1 rifles (IIRC) are patterned alike. You will have to have an "internal" stamping to verify manufacturer. That is, if there's a makers' mark there at all. Best, Joe

There ARE differences in the butt plate, not only by manufacturer but also by era of manufacture. I don't remember them all right now and all the M1s are back at the shop. To be "all correct" a rifle should/must have the correct butt plate. Check out the expert forums that deals with Garands and either search the topic or ask your question - you will be amazed at the variety. I do remember that Winchester has a flat "margin" around the crosshatching. Also the hinges on the "trap door" differ from manufacturer to manufacturer. ETC.
