What gauge is the Model 24... it makes a big difference to the collectors and the value.

click, per your request I offer the following info about the RIA '03.

The receiver sight is certainly an aftermarket addition. The holes used to mount the sight make it a very poor candidate for restoration to military configuration. If the sn is lower than 285507 it has a single heat treated receiver and is generally considered unsafe for firing. The quality of the workmanship determines the value of the rifle as a hunting rifle. Pictures or detailed description of the rifle will help suggest a value. A SWAG would be $250-$300. My $.02 FWIW.

I assumed you read the Rock Island Arsenal off the receiver ring. RIA 1903's only came in the issue type configuration. By this I mean it would have a flip up rear sight that is mounted on a barrel sleeve just forward of the receiver ring. If it is a 1903 from Springfield Armory, yes it could have come with a receiver sight. The serial number that I gave to identify low numbers applies to RIA rifles. If it is indeed a 1903 from Springfield Armory, then the low numbers would be those with serial numbers lower than 800000. (not a certain number but generally accepted ending of the low number Springfield made 1903's)

Additional: I don't know what book you have but it may be referring to what collector's call the 1903 Springfield NRA Sporter. That is a special limited production (approx 5,000) rifle. It came with a receiver sight and sporting type walnut stock. It is very unlikely that one would now be in a maple stock. There are untold thousands of sporterized 1903 and 1903A3 rifles that vary in quality from works of art to those converted by unskilled persons using crude tools.

Depending upon the barrel length and chokes, it could be worth anywhere between $250 - $500.
