I'm looking for an 1871 open top revolver. Does Uberti make them for both Taylor and Cimarron? How about EMF?

hello: I've seen no one has answered your question, so I'll try, and if I am wrong I'm sure it will evoke someone into telling us both the correct answer. most certainly Cimarron cartridge guns are made by Uberti. excellant quality and resale value. on the percussion side of things, I'm pretty sure Cimarron are Uberti also. as for Taylors, I think they could be Pietta, or Armi sport percussion, and long guns. If you can look at the gun you want in person, you may find a manufacure's mark. a "U" inside a cogg, or rifled barrel would be a Uberti. an FAP inside a triangle is Pietta. a DP is Pedersoli, an AC within a circle is Armi Sport. hope this helps AW

    Here is my opinion:
First of all, remember that hese companies are importers. I would buy the gun labeled as being from either Taylor's or Cimmaron and no one else. Both Cimmaron and Taylor's sell Uberti guns and guns maded by Pedersoli and Pietta, as does EMF. All three have a catalog that you can either buy for about $5.00 or perhaps(?) download onto your computer. NONE of the companies provide information on their websites or in their catalogs that answer all the questions that a knowledgeable or even a semi-knowledgeable user would ask. Also, I have never been pleased with the technical support from any of these companies (i.e. I call them and ask questions and they don't answer or give vague or bs answers). I consider this a huge failing on their part.

I believe all of the 1871 open-top replicas out there today are made by Uberti, so any real differences are in either the finish, or the configuration of the gun. By that I mean, Taylor's offers a version of the 1873 Winchester rifle configured to Cody Conagher's (a SASS alias for a Virginia-based gun dealer/smith) specification for a specific, non-standard barrel length. Cimmaron and the others can't get this particular configuration from Uberti, but the action, the steel used, the parts, etc. are all the same. Don't let anyone steer you otherwise on that point. Cimmaron offers guns with upgraded finish done in the US. Be careful and do not buy a gun with the "old" finish that the importers may offer. The way they get that weathered look includes the use of acid, which does wonders for the gun's bore! Also, the importer, particularly Cimmaron offers guns that have been "slicked-up" or "worked-over" with special action jobs. These enhancements are performed in the US and are at optional cost. Unless you have a FFL, you can't buy the gun direct from the importer. You local gun dealer can order it. Whether he charges you full-tilt MSRP sticker price is another thing. I hope this helps.
