Go to Wolff Gunsprings site. www.gunsprings.com they stock "trigger return" & "hammer" springs for the 639. IF it's a spring problem? These would be the springs to replace.

Since you bought the pistol used and it's over 20 years old, perhaps its just a matter of replacing the S & W factory springs?

I paid my gunsmith to do a trigger job on my M669, but that didn't do much to improve things. He told me that, other than smoothing the small parts, there isn't a lot that can be done on 1st & 2nd generation Smith autos.

boots513 I too own a S&W 639. Not sure what you mean a little sloppy...there is some movement of the trigger before the hammer starts to move rearward in double action...the trigger can be pulled rearward about 1/8 inch before you see or feel any hammer movement. Is that what you are talking about. Also the barrel is 4 inches...not aware of any 3 1/2 inch barrels on the 639.

**** 5mmgunguy,i looked it in the 28th gun trader guide it read 3.5 bbl 6.9 in overall and i guess it is when hammer returns after pulling the trigger thanks boots

S&W's autopistols from that time period tended to be a little rough internally, especially their stainless models.

Only a few small areas of these pistol's lockwork were actually fitted/polished during manufacture. The inevitable result is that during break in there's going to be some very fine grit generated by them settling in. If the pistol has never received a detailed cleaning it's still in there somewhere, along with old lube residue and anything else that happened to creep in over the past 25-30 years.

The first thing I'd do is detail strip it, thoroughly clean everything to remove any accumulated grit and junk, then lube well. In other words, bring it back to square one before evaluation.

BTW-639 has a 4 in. barrel. Semiauto barrels are measured from the breech face.

boots513. I agree that the overall length is 6.9 inches, but trust me the barrel is 4 inches not 3.5 inches. Just take it out of the gun and measure it. 4 inches it will be.

I am looking for a manual safety lever for my 639 stainless automatic.
Does anyone happen to have a single sided manual safety lever? I dont prefer the ambidexterous one that is on there now. I removed the opposite side but it does not look right. I want the real single manual lever so that its nice and smooth on the other side. If you do could you email me at bloodsportrob@verizon.net

    thanks guys,

    Rob,

Not sure if S&W made it with a single sided safety. But assuming they did, have you tried Numrich Arms?

Yeah they did make their safeties single sided back in the early 80's. I have a 639 with adjustable sights (ramped)and the safety is a manual single. But my other one with the fixed sights does not have that. I will try that site you mentioned.
thanks for the heads up. [:D]
