How do the ballistics compare between a .30-06 from a 18.5 inch barrel and a .308 from a 22 inch barrel?

To compare you should choose a bullet weight. A rule of thumb is each reduction of 25 to 50 fps per inch of barrel reduced. Based on the rule the 308 Win should have higher velocities up to about 165 gr bullets and the 308 should be as fast for bullets to 200 grains. If you visit a reloading website you should be able to find some actual data. Also check the Ackley publications as there was series of tests sawing off a barrel and recording the velocity. Regards.

In a test constant, (same bullet/powder amount/chamber freebore and leade) you'll get about 50fps loss per inch of barrel loss.

The 30-06 will be slightly higher in fps with a 22" barrel than a .308 in 22" barrel.

With off-the-shelf ammo of the same bullet weight, 30-06 in 18.5" barrel will be slightly less (that's slightly-somewhere less than 200fps) than a .308 in a 22" barrel.

Above is a gross generality. Although both barrels are .308, the difference in action type, or primers, or powder burn rate, or even rifling style will add to the variable. Best, Joe

The loads and barrel lengths you are comparing will show only small differences in velocity, just as givette and scubabobf have stated.
That's theoretical differences, or lab measured differences.

In the field, there would be NO DIFFERENCE.
There are several other variables to consider, and the shooter is usually the largest.[:0]

Use the gun YOU shoot best and you will have taken care of the largest variable.

    ENJOY !

i don,t know about the 308 but my 7600 carbine in 3006 with a 18.5 inch barrel sends a 165 gr nosler boat tail at 2710fps with 58grs imr 4350. my rem. 700 with a 22 inch barrel with the same load shoots 2840fps. not enough to bother me in a hunting rifle. eastbank.
