Savage No4 MK1*

I just bought a Savage No4 Mk1*. It's in great shape, the only problem is when I close the bolt. The cutt out right in front of the chamber is catching the bolt and not letting it close all the way. If I hold the front of the bolt down with one finger it will close with out any problems.
Is there any way to fix this?

Remove the bolt from the rifle and make sure that the bolt head is screwed all the way into the bolt.

Did you raise the rear sight?

Yes the rear sight is raised.

Take it all the way down, clean and lub see if that helps.

My Long Branch does this when empty sometimes, but when loaded it doesnt.

All I can say is check twice about screwing the bolthead all the way in. I had the same problem until I noticed it and corrected the problem.
The problem is the rifle will allow it to shoot one turn out. So remove bolt turn one more turn in and fire it that-a-way. It should help.

"Wehrmacht_45" thats what the problem was. I havn't had time to take it out and shoot so I didn't even think about trying to close the bolt with any ammo in the magazine. But it works fine when the bolt is pushing the cartridge out of the magazine.

Glad it worked. The tension keeps mine from popping out of the guide channel as well. It vexed me at first but I just had to sit and think about it for awhile to see the answer.
