WW II vet K98 bring back. I spoke to the owner last night, and have limited info on the rifle.
Very good condition.
K98 with a scope mount on receiver--no scope.
I have to drive 200 miles to look at the rifle.
Can anyone give me a SWAG?
TIA

Really not enough info to give an opinion. If the mount is orginal then it was a sniper rifle. If so it could be a valuable piece. If this is something that was done to "sporterize" if then it would make the gun less valuable.

Bill, is the mount on top, or the left side? Either one should be some type of quick release. They used a claw or turret mount on top. The third type of mount used had a base integral with the rear sight mount on the left side. Some had a "Flag" safety for scope clearance too.
Side mount with a flag safety.

If its under 500 and has matching # I would. They are getting expensive and those bring backs in good condition demand a good penny.

Most of the info given above is accurate. If the scope mount is drilled and tapped, and is not original, then examine the weapon for original stock and matching numbers. If they are okay I would buy it to part out. The ruined (drilled and tapped) receiver pretty much kills the big bucks. An unhurt original stock will bring over a hundred bucks, original slings about a hundred.

I looked at the rifle today. It is a DWM sporting rifle with 'claw type' scope mounts. S/N 2XX (matching). 8mm stepped barrel. Crown N proof on reciever. Surface rust on bolt. Stock dinged up. Dark bore.
I made an offer--he declined. I was buying a rifle, not a story (sniper rifle). Worth the trip.
