Quieter Air Rifles??

Having recently moved to the mountains after retiring, I've found that there are cute, fuzzy, but very destructive critters that abound in our new patch of paradise. The last Rifle I ever used was in VietNam in the mid 60's. So, I checked out the local Feed, Farm & Firearms and came home with an RWS Mendoza 600, .177. I zeroed it in with a phone book tied to a tree using the small lead hollowpoint Ammo they threw in, but I'm not happy with the report. In my opinion it "cracks" almost as loud as a .22 short. I did take a ground squirrel at about 15 - 20 yards the next day with one shot, so I'm happy with the results, but it did scare everyone else away for a good distance. Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced, quieter, accurate Air Rifle please?

I think the .177 maybe going supersonic and so what you hear is the supersonic crack. I have a Beeman 20 cal and it shoots the heavy 20 cal pellet at 900 fps...sounds a little loader than a Daisy BB gun and it is still packing good energy at 50 yards.

Don't junk the gun, as there is an easy solution. I too have an RWS 48 that will go supersonic with the lighter weight pellets. Yes, the ammunition these fire can be as complex as a centerfire rifle. The 177 pellets are available from a saboted 4.2 grain to a pointed 11.4 grain. I believe those hollowpoints are around 7 and change. Go to airgunsexpress.com, or pyramidair, and get yourself some Beeman Silver Jet pointeds...they are the 11.4's. It will slow it down to subsonic, and get rid of the crack, and give you some more energy, and quite often better accuracy. You will see quite a selection of different manufacturers, styles, and weights of projectiles on those sites. BTW those little 4 somethings...they will go 1400-1500fps out of a 38 pound spring gun. Talk about crack!

For a quite Pellet Rifle you should take a look at the Gamo Whisper, it comes with a sound modulator that reduces sound by 50%:

Sound modulator/silencer or not, if the projectile is exceeding the speed of sound, you are going to get a supersonic crack. The heavy pellet will quiet things considerably.
