Ithaca NID disassembly

I recently bought an Ithaca NID 12 ga Field grade shotgun on Gunbroker. The wood was redone at some point and not very well. I am thinking about taking the stock off to remove old varnish layers and remove built up crud from the checkering. Is there any special considerations to know about when removing the stock? Mechanically it is OK.
