1895 "Box Magazine" Winchester/30-40 Krag

I am researching a replacement rifle for my family that was carried by my GGrandpa Charlie Spurlock of Harlan County,Ky, during the late 1800's/early 1900's. Only a couple of family members are still alive who actually saw the rifle, and there are a couple of critical differences between them to establish the exact type rifle he carried most of his life. Differences: #1- It is said his rifle had an "Octagonal Barrel". #2- It was said to be a "long barreled, lever action, box magazine" 1895 Winchester. Can #1 and #2 match to make a 1895 Winchester/30-40Krag?

You attention to my inquiry is most appreciated. My family let GGrandpa Charlie's rifle get out of family hands. So, I am just trying to find the closest similar rifle to replace in stock for his memory.

Thanks so much, Dan

    Hello Dan,

#1 and #2 can not match. Winchester did make the Modfel 1895 with an octagon barrel, but only in 38-72 W.C.F. and 40-82 W.C.F. Those that were chambered for the 30/40 Krag cartridge (30 U.S.) were made with a 28" round barrel as standard.
