Have a friend looking for a 22 WMRF or 17 HMR. semi automatic. He jusr bought a NIB BRNO and now thinks it is too nice to take out to the farm and use it, Is now looking for something a little less expensive, interested in the synthetic stocked model 597. Would appreciate it if anyone here with any experience with this piece would post any thought / opinions as to accuracy, function, etc.
Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks to all in advance!!!

We are not excited about the 597 or any semi auto in 22mag or .17HMR . Rem is one of the only companies still making one and they are hit and miss with reliabilty..Mostly miss atleast in our shop experience .. Go Bolt or lever and be much happier in the long run.. There is a reason these two rounds are not chambered in semi autos...

jamesjo I have a Rem 597 in 17 HMR with the synthetic stock. I have never had any function problems. The gun is very accurate. I have a 2x7 scope and on 7 power off the bench it shoots 5 shots inside an inch at 100 yards...that is very good in mt book. The gun is competely stock except for a replacement 2 1/2 pound jarvis hammer. I love it.

I have a 597 syn. stock in 22 WMR. Accuracy is great. The only issue I have with it is occasional feed problems. The least of these problems is with CCI ammo. Winchester was the worse and the 40 grain loads seem to be more reliable than the 30's. But the 30 grain CCI TNT round is excellent for the little rodents so I deal with it. The 30's will always throw the bolt back far enough to eject the spent shell and chamber the next round but sometimes not far enough to cock it so I have to manually cycle one round and then it's back to normal.

I have a 597 in HMR and 22LR, both with laminated stocks and heavy barrels. I have had occasional feeding issues, but over all, I really like them. Some people are afraid to try, all that does is keep the price down for the rest of us. Make sure you are using the metal magazines, and keep the rifles clean and lubricated.

I bought a 597 22 lr and it is a piece of crap. Most all of the posters have said the same thing, I have occasional feeding problems. That is the problem with it in a nut shell. It will not reliabily feed and jams constantly. The 22 lr is the main culprit. The rifle comes with the cheapest piece of plastic clip I have ever seen. The problem is bad enough to warrent a company to make a better clip for it as an after-market item. I don't know about anybody else but it frost my can to buy a factory new rifle and have to go outside to buy an additional part to make it function as it should from the factory. The ruger trigger is a claassic example.

I had a 597 in .22 Magnum and what was saad above is very accurate. Feeding, feeding and feeding. The cheapo plastic magazine appears to be the culprit! It did (I say did because I sold it) feed CCI ammo the best but it waw spotty at best. Accuracy was not a problem - no more so than in any semi auto - and workmanship was also OK. Mine was the wood stock, not black palstic. I have the Brno now and there is still a magazine issue and it is the COST of replacement magazines that is a problem NOT the feeding. I'm looking for a H&K Mod 270 .22Mag - maybe I'll go that way IF I ever find one.

Many, many threads about this gun. I'll say it again. Mine has performed flawless from day one. Never a jam and excellent accuracy. I'll put it up against any bolt gun as far as accuracy is concerned. I guess there are some lemons in every model, but mine is flawless. Mine is the .22 WMR, not the .22 LR.

    Good luck.

The H&K 270 is only in 22LR. The 22 Magnum was the H&K 300. Sounds like there are some bad 597s out there. By-the-way my magzine is made of metal, not plastic. Not sure what it is, really light. Good luck.
