I have a Colt Automatic, the forerunner of the Colt Woodsman, it is in 22 cal, has all original parts, stamped Colt Automatic, with rearing Colt on right side. Shoot only 22 shorts, as it has not had the recoil spring updated for modern high power 22 ammo. Can anyone temm anything about it's history.Thank you in advance.

Didnt know they made any Woodsmans that shoot only .22 shorts.

In addition to the heavier recoil spring, it will also need the case hardened mainspring housing for shooting hi-vel ammo.

The early guns used standard velocity 22 long rifle. The replacement mainspring housing will not be easly to find. The early ones work just fine with current standard velocity 22LRs. For that matter, have also used them with high velocity 22 LRs but a steady diet of high velocity ammo would not be a good idea.
