Basic gun operations question

When a bolt in a semi-auto .22 rifle is pulled back what catches/makes/engages whatever the proper term would be, to allow the trigger to release the firing pin? Does my thinking is that the firing pin has to be retained in the rear position by something.

The part your referring to is called the sear.

So possibly if trigger does nothing after the bolt has been pulled back and returned to battery, the sear is broke?

It depends on the internal mechanism of the firearm, they vary markedly. I had similar problems with a High Standard Duramatic pistol years ago. It wasn't the sear itself but the sear spring that actuates the sear. No way to tell unless you get a schematic and disassemble the rifle.
