In the old days gunsmiths used to take 2 slides and weld them up I Have never seen ANY factory 6 inch can you seen some in focus close-up pictures of both the inside and outside of the slide. . My first guess is it was made by a gunsmith.

I am quite familiar with slides that are welded together. Back in the 60 s , i use to slober over the pictures of long slide Clarks in the Gil Hebard catalog. This slde does not have any indication of being a weld job on the inside, I have had a number of competent tool and die makers study the inside of the slide ,and they agree with me , its not a weld job. What makes it very strange is the following -
    1. the left slide panel is inscribed " SPECIAL EDITION"
    2. the RH panel has a 2 line roll mark - " Colt Automatic" then
"CALIBRE 45" Notice the British spelling. The roll mark is quite similar to early Colt rollmarks where Colt used the British spelling for "CALIBRE" but it NOT identical. Did Colt use more than one?
    3. The finger grooves are quite similar to a slanted Gold Cup finger grooves, but they are wider than a gold cup, and there are 12 , ( instead of eleven lines )
    4. It is a fixed sight , std Govt model slot
    5. The slide is a series 80
    6. It came assembled to a customized Hartford series 80 frame , serial # 27534XX , ( according to the Colt 1996 catalog,it shows pic
    of 1911 serial # 2723729, so I'm assuming its post 1996.
    7. The slide does not look like any 6 " slide available from Brownnells.Who would go to the trouble of tooling /inscribing this ?
Any ideas ? I don't know how to attach pictures to this forum
