reserve auctions

I have been on GB for many years and make a few purchases, but I really don't understand "why" someone has a reserve auction. There's no listing fees here, so the only reason I can think of is that someone really doesn't want to sell the gun, just find the true value.
If they already have a minimum they'll sell for, then why not list it as starting price? I tend to not look at the $2000 guns that start at $100 with a reserve because I don't want to "follow them", yet I might have bid on them with a realistic anticipation of winning the auction (and realistic starting price, not $100 for a $2K value)
What am I missing? Someone enlighten me that uses this method.

It's a lost cause. [:(]
No rocket science involved here. This is their personal property, if they want to set a reserve on it, so it don't get stolen, that's there prerogative. If you don't like reserve auctions and won't bid on them, that's your prerogative. Whining about it on the experts forum, ain't going to make a bit of difference.
Seems the only one whining is you. If you dont want the gun stolen set the price where you want it to start, get it?
