Well, when folks ask us about assembling their own AR-type rifle, the response is always: You will take a beating on resale, as no one wants a mixed parts mongrel assembled by someone who has no idea what he is doing.

Walk on, let him take his beating.

For your first AR, buy a "brand name", new in the box. Yes, it will cost a little more, but you will get exactly the configuration you want, & it will come with a factory warranty.

To me you have to look at the quality of parts in a build rather then who slapped it together. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to build an AR15. There is no hand fitting required, everything is just bolted together per say and torqued to specs. There is nothing more to do that you can't do as than the factory. If that was the case you wouldn't see factory recalls. I also don't worry about how much I can resell a gun for I buy it to shoot. The above gun will look the same after firing 5,000 rounds out of it as the factory one. I have two guns in my signature post one an Armalite and the other a CMMG nobody could tell by looking at them if they were factory built or not. The Armalite is all Armalite parts and the CMMG is all CMMG. They shoot and work as good as any factory gun and I saved a ton of money.
If by all means you are buying it as an investment well good luckk as there are hundreds and hundreds of those factory guns right here on GB that the owners or dealers can't sell. The AR market is about as flooded as it can get. And your new factory gun that's all shot up again won't get you as much as a new one when it comes time to sell it. The lower receiver in my PRICELESS thread is a Superior Arms lower and I really like the trigger adjustment that they put into their lower
    That's just MHO.

Every thing included here is of good quality product at $700 it would be a very good deal. JT is a reputable company and the YHM free float hand guard is a good one also roughly a $200 item by itself. I just built a retro flat top with a Superior Arms lower and I really like the built in trigger adjustment that eliminates all that trigger creep that is so common in AR's its a win win for you.

    +1 !!

I don't know when AR's became collectable. They're for shooting. New they bring the most and from there on down is what they bring. But, you can make some of the money back up by putting a new, relatively inexpensive, barrel on there after you've run about 10k through there. The bolt/bolt carrier/upper receiver and the buffer tube in the stock should all be workin' really smooth by then.[:D]

Skip the AR all together, far better choices out there for $1000 or so.

From the sounds of it, you would be one of those guys Neal was talking about, to NOT buy from. It is not like putting together a jig-saw puzzle on your kitchen table. There is headspacing that has to be taken into account for too. And yes, the people at Vulcan/Hesse/Blackthorne can screw up anything they build too.

    To the OP,

Start with a Rock River Arms, Stag Arms, or DPMS...you will not be sorry in the future, nor have to explain why you are trying to offload an AR that doesn't work.

The comment about "slapped together" reminded me of the FN worker I saw assembling AR parts at the factory. He must have doing piece work with little supervision because I assure you, I take a lot more care in the fitting and assembly of parts than he did. Another experience of factory assembly I saw in person was at the John Deere engine plant at Waterloo Ia. Guy was installing rings on pistons by the piece count and I cringed at every one I saw him do. Just goes to show that it's the engineering that makes the product perform as much as the assembly.
