Friend of mine just purchased a S&W M&P Pro. Haven't seen it yet, but he keeps on telling me how much better it is than a standard M&P. What makes it so much better?

It goes to "11". [:p]
OK, main differences:
-Lighter/better 4-5 lb trigger.
-New sights; fiber optic front and Novak increased sight radius rear.
-Lack of serrations on front of slide.
Front slide serrations are worthless in my opinion. Just one more thing to snag/irritate and if you want to do a "press check" to check chamber loading you can (and IMO should) use the rear serrations.
The trigger and sight thing you could probably do to any M&P with aftermarket parts if you wanted.

on the ones I have seen the std m&p will not fire without a magazine inserted
That is an option.
They make the M&P with the option of external safety or not, and mag disconnect or not.
