Just trying to figure these guns out I see a multitude of names, olympic, carr, double star, stag, superior, rock river, dpms, ect. what if anything do these mean are any junk or are they all on the same playing field.
And if I can't find what I'm looking for would it be better to buy a complete upper and lower and put together myself and if so what brand name to start with.
P.S. my buddy just got a double star and I shot it last night seemed to be a real nice one any and all thoughts, thanks guys

The only ones I know to be questionable are the Hesse/Blackthorne/Vulcan. Most of the other ones I come across work good. To pretty much be guaranteed that one will work a name brand helps. But, then again you pay more for it.

    Colt
    Armalite,
    Stag
    Olympic Arms
    Rock River
    Noveske (spendy)
    Alexander Arms (non 223/5.56
    Bushmaster (owned by Remington)
    Remington

Are all good names. I know many will notice I left DPMS off there. That is because I handled some in a local shop some years ago that had issues with hanging up. From what I understand That has long since been worked out. And, I understand they were bought by someone. Someone could maybe help with that. However, when you handle it if it doesn't hang up, and goes through the function check okay then it's probably good.

i once read rock river gaurantee's their product to shoot two inch groups or better at 200 yrds out of the box. i can only vouch for the used one i got a hold of and sure 'nuff, it will shoot less than two inch groups at 200 yrds although i did work up a load for it before it would......... 24 gr. varget with 55 gr v-max l.c. brass win. primer, primer pocket uniformed, flash hole de-burred. shot off sand bags on a calm day with leupold glass.

I had trouble in a shop I was working for with Armalite. They tried to argue that the problem with one of their guns we sold was the ammo. I explained I had tried three or four different loads, including Lake City, with the same problem. They finally accepted responsibility and fixed the gas system (the problem an Air Force armorer friend of mine diagnosed), but I wouldn't recommend dealing with them. I consider Stag to be the best value. As a dealer, I can verify that their new piston model has the lowest wholesale price for that style.

The search function does not work for all people! Why do you have to be rude to the guy. If you don't want to read his post or answer his question than don't.

Like others have said, avoid Hesse/Blackthorne/Vulcan. They are all the same gun, it's just that the company changes it's name when it gets a bad reputation so it can sell more junk. My personal choices would be Rock River, and Bushmaster. The Colts are also nice but you pay alot for the name.

I have both Rock River and Olympic arms and they are top notch firearms.

    I'd like to add,

    larue tactical(spendy as SW says)
    fulton armory(also spendy)
    Double Star
CMMG(thought I think they have been bought by a conglomerate because they have switched alot of things from how they once done things, they still make good rifles.)

Most would be OK, just avoid Blackthorne/Vulcan stuff...
