H & R model 939 .22 cal pistol question?

I just acquired an H & R model 939 9 shot pisol and it has some kind of lock in the butt of the pistol grip. I did not get a key for the lock with the gun and assume it is a trigger lock. I took off the pistol grips to look inside and the lock cylinder has a short rod attached but it does not appear to do anything. I have tried to find schematics to see what this lock is and does but can't find any. Does anyone know what this lock mechansim is and what it does?

The key lock feature was offered by H&R on their Models 732 and 939 for a couple years (circa 1958-1972.) The lock blocks the movement of the guide rod in the main spring assembly which will not allow the hammer to be drawn back. The H&R advertising of that time period stated that this feature was a "new safety feature". Seems they were about 35 - 40 years ahead of the curve - but then dropped it in variations made after 1972 (the transfer bar safety/ignition system was introduced in 1973) - it was never reintroduced.
