1909 Maxim Silencer

I have a 1909 Maxim Silencer for a rifle. I was wondering if anyone on this message board knew of its worth or rarity? I know the Maxim Silencers where the first successful mass produced commercial silencer and it's inventor was Hiram Percy Maxim. Any postings in regard to its worth and rarity would be greatly appreciated.

Hopefully your supressor was papered during the amnesty period in 1968. If it hasn't been, it's worth and rarity are moot.
Perhaps it would be prudent to consider it's rapid destruction, rather then face an early morning visit from the "Jack Booted Thugs"

OK, so IAMME may have a problem. How would a law abiding citizen go about obtaining a vintage Maxim acoustic surpressor and then be able to keep it? I've seen a number of old pump 22 rifle barrels either threaded or with the Maxim adaptor collar. Can a nonfunctioning "replica" be possessed without gettting crossways with the feds?

deldillco: You'd have to purchase a previously registered Silencer and go thru a Class 3 dealer...
To get the exact program....You need to talk to Mark Christian...He can give You the Exact procedure....Mark will be passing this way shortley and I'm sure He will respond to your question............

Since your profile tells us nothing about yourself other than the fact that you like .22 cal pump rifles there is no way for me to tell whether or not silencers are even legal where you live. Those old Maxim's (which Capt. Kirk and I were dicussing over lunch on Friday) are far more collectable than they are effective so if you plan on spending the several hundred dollars it will cost to purchase registered vintage Maxim, then plan on enjoying it only for historical appeal rather than any actual benifits from noise suppression. You'll have make some calls to a few class three dealers in your area (wherever that may be) to see if a Maxim can be located. Replicas are unrestricted but you always have to be cafeful that the replica does not manage to lower the sound signature even slightly. I know of no one currently who produces a replica Maxim silencer.

    Mark,
Thanks for the reply. I'm glad that someone else broached the subject. It is not a subject easily talked about around women and children! My only knowlege of the Maxim silencer is from Schwing (page 288 in 90/06 book) and an old ad that I think I saw in the Marlin book. Hundreds of dollars and jumping through all kinds of hoops is not something that I am looking to do. My real interest is as a vintage option for an early pump 22. The DNR, here in MN, says that a threaded barrel is illegal but I have seen several at gun shows. Regulatory discretion? What is the status of a nonfunctional replica? Without going to the "big house" is there as way to obtain the external dimensions? How bad will I be hasseled over a replica? Your input is appreciated.

Sure, it is a facinating topic.
But I guess if you REALLY NEED one, being cross-wise with the law would not be your biggest problem.
