Looking for new rifle

I am in the process of looking for a new rifle for the upcomming deer season (fall '08). I hunt in Northern Minnesota where there can be thick woods, but also longer shots down old logging roads or sometimes across open fields. Generally, though a 200+ yard shot would be the exception. I am looking for something that has a quick, smooth action, is rugged, reliable, and something that I can pass down to my 3 year old when he is able to start hunting. My price range is $400-600. I have looked at the Tikka T-3 lite synthetic, Remmington 7600 and a Marlin 336. The BAR also is a beautiful gun, but I don't think I want to go with an autoloader. As far as caliber, I am thinking .308 Winchester, .270 Winchester, or .243 Winchester (I know I can't get the Marlin in any of these calibers).
Any and all suggestions/comments would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Check out the Savages if you have not already, they have come a long way.

Sounds like the .270 or maybe a 30-06 would be your best bet.

    my 2 cents.

I'm a little partial to the marlin. I hunt Vermont and NY, Not much different than your neck of the woods. Marlin has the new 308 marlin that almost compares to the winchester round. If you can afford one, the model 7 remington stainless in 308 is a good way to go. Also the ruger ultralite in the same caliber. If recoil is a problem then opt for a 243 or 260.Find and older model 336SC with the half mag in 35 remington and it will do the job quite well out to 175 or so. just my two cents

tikkas are in that price range, and have very slick bolts, good triggers, and usually very accurate. mine is in 300 win mag and i love it. but for whitetails at any range i prefer my 270s--plenty of power, modest recoil, ammo available, flat enough for long shots. i like 130 grain hornady sst. has always done the job on whitetails 20-300 yards and 100-340 lbs, plus a black bear in AK. picked out a tikka lite in 270 for bro in law and he loves it

The new 308 marlin sounds like a winner.Cant wait to get a look at one.I think the 243 is a little light for your purpose. I guess if I were choosing it would be the 270.

Welcome to the forum. I think you have come to the right place. Tikka, Howa, Savage and CZ give you the most bang for a buck. You would not go wrong with anything they make. The 30-06 is the most versatile cartridge ever designed.

Buy a used Remington 700 and put the best scope you can buy on it. I recommend Burris scopes in Burris Signature rings. A 3X9 Fullfield would work great. Most deer rifles have so few rounds through them as to be like new.

I suggest a .308 or 30-06. Ammo is everywhere and dead is dead.

I'd go for the Tikka, Savage, or Howa. The Savage and Howa would allow more money for a good scope. You can do a search of the forum to find lots of old topics about these two. Nothing wrong with Remington but I think you are paying more for the name than some other brands. With the different shots you have in mind I think the 270 would be perfect. Check out this website. He has lots all of the brands mentioned and most of the time some good prices. He does lots of business here on the auction side of GB.

Another vote for a 308 Marlin.

    But....

Tikka's are very smooth and acceptionally accurate.

    A T3 in 243, 257 Roberts, or 7mm-08 would be a deer killing machine.

I think a 270's recoil may be too sharp for a youngin.

    +1 ! I use a 700 in .35 Whelan for almost everything. If I'm feeling lazy I carry a model Seven in .308.
