i've been thinking of buying an upper in 6.8,but after an initial flurry of info/articles,public interest and product development seems to have fizzled down.any recomendations as to maker, model, sources of decent factory ammo, etc?uses would be primarily hunting, already have 556 ar's for other uses, thx

Buy am upper made for a more accpeted round,..such as maybe a 260rem or even a 243win. If you want it to be a short, fat round,...then a 243WSSM or a 25WSSM would beat the 6.8 hands down with a much better bullet selection.
2. The 25WSSM and the .243 WXXM will live longer than the 6.8?
3. The .260 Rem in the AR format is already dead. Who do you know that has bought one? Nobody.
4. He is asking who has experience "with this" (6.8). My experience is that it can take down 150 lb.wild boars with one shot on more than one occasion. Have you ever tried one? You might be surprised. You may remember when the 5.56 first came out many were saying these same things about it. I became familiar with this round in 1967. I have 3 now. The Colt 6920 is in my opinion the best AR made, but it seldom goes on any hunting trips.
5. And lastly, how far do you plan to shoot?
1.- I believe the 7.62x39 only requires the AR15 platform.
2.-I think the 6.8 and the WSSM's are already done as frontline sellers. I do think too that the ballistics are just mediocre. Mediocre is good enough to take a wild boar at 150 yds. I found that out to 300 yds the drop is pretty severe. For me, it's an improvement as a battle round over the 5.56 but not the best improvement. I do understand that in the military and also the private sector over in Iraq, it's not at all the round of choice. I will agree with JustC in that one of it's biggest handicaps is very few high BC bullets are made in .277 cal. Berger now makes a 150 gr. VLD for it with I believe a .595(?) BC.
3.- As far as the .260 Rem, I know of a security company that has bought them specifically for their guys. They opted for full power 6.5 cases versus the lower powered 6.5 Grendel. I was told specifically for the flatter short range trajectory. Their standard loading is 140 gr. bullets. So, I don't think it's dead. I actually think it's an idea that is starting to catch on. It will take time, though. Too many mindsets that they "might as well just go with the .308".
For me I'm glad to say I was hesitant to buy one and get a little more hands on info instead of published info that may or may not be skewed. I would buy one if the price was right at this point, but I wouldn't go out of my way to get one like I have other cartridges.
1. TSSR - The 7.62 would require an AR-10 platform.

shooter10,
Please check your facts. The 7.62x39, is available, and has been for a while on the AR15 platform. There are many Colt's out there, if you can find anyone who wants to part with them.
Also, I will tell you, and show if needed that I can take down a 150# boar with a 22LR.
As far as tthe 260 Remington is concerned...well just a little note, and you can check it out...it tickles the shoulder like a 243, has better hitting power than some 308/7.62 NATO ammo at 400+ yards, and shoots as flat as a 270. For Gods sake...it is a 6.5on a popular case. Most people who don't like the round... have never tried it, or don't even know what it is.
I do agree that the 243, and 25WSSM rounds are not the most popular, but if given the choice on an AR15 platform for something to reach out and touch something with...one of those would be my choice.
Now back to the 6.8...the 6.8 was dreamed up by big green so they too could share in the wealth of out military contracts. Lets face it...millions of rounds versus a sliding civilian market. Like I already mentioned, the better round had been around since 1943.
Basically my opinion is that it is a fad/gimmic that will slowly fade away. When it does, ammo is going to be expensive...more so than it is now.
So techically you can get an AR-15 upper in 7.62- but does this man wants to look all over the earth for the discontinued Colt and pay $1195 (on line seller has it marked "RARE") another has one for about $800... for just the upper? And your are right DPMS does make a 7.62 for about $800. A little rude with the "check your facts" remark, but I missed that one. I had asked several AR-15 shooters and they said not available, because if you go to 50 gun stores you would not see one. So thus NOT AVAILABLE. And yes, you can kill hogs with a .22 LR, but be realistic. People have been killed with BB guns. Would you suggest our troops go to battle with a BB gun? And yes, you are entltled to your opinion...just like me.
Do some research, dppatrol. 7.62 (and 6.8) may not be the way to go.
Ok - TSR - AVAILABLE?

Rare? of course it is rare if i am the seller, and SUPPOSEDLY have the only one made, that 2000 people want. Sending out troops to battle with a 5.56, or 6.8 is partly to blame why our number of deceased is numbering over 4000. It is also why every archived M-14 that could be found is back in service. It is also why the door to door soldiers in Afghanistan, and Iraq will often pick up an insurgents AK in favor of the 5.56 or 6.8. Ask Bushmaster or Alexander arms how many 450 bushmaster, and 50 beuowolf weapons they have been sending to the sand box.
