For you Winchester Model 50 & 59 experts:

What type of wrench do you use to unscrew the closing spring tube so that the buttstock can be removed from the receiver, or do you use a very wide bladed screwdriver? [?]

I was expecting more of a nightmare experience, on line with the trigger mechanism of a Nylon 66. What a relief to know that it is not! [:D]

I think I'll make a wax cast of the head of the closing spring tube so that I can make a permanent tool to use.

All parts of the Model 50 have been stripped, cleaned, and put back together, except for the removal of the buttstock and the extractor from the bolt ..... and it was the thought of the removal of that tiny, recessed extractor pin that I passed on that!

All in all, it was a pleasant experience, and one that I can add to those Quantico memories when I was blind folded and had to strip for cleaning and reassembly an M14, M16 and M60 with a Drill Instructor politely whispering in my ear! [;)]

heck, if you got machining at your disposal, get a pipe the same dia as the stock tube and notch out 2 prongs, drill a hole thru on the other end and slip a rod in it to make a t-handle tool.
my option is for po-boy field strip quick method.

bobski - I'll be doing just about what you mentioned, only I'll be using a socket and extension, but I'll have made a "wax reference" to help me keep from screwing things up, which I am always bound to do ...... no gaurantees I won't screw up, anyway!!! [:o)] I just don't want to leave any "evidence of my work" (unless it's called for) on a nice firearm. [8D]

    Scoots,
Do you have "Dollar Stores" where you live? Out here every one of them carries these little sets of miniature screwdrivers, 11 or 12 little jeweler's-type to the set in these little plastic boxes. For a buck, these things are amazing. They are of hardened steel and can be used for all kinds of stuff, including screws.

Get 4 or 5 sets of these things. You can grind off the tip flat and use them for punches. They work very well, especially the very smallest ones. You never have a punch that small handy.

Just the thing for "that tiny, recessed extractor pin that I passed on...."

Wolf. - I do have one of those "Dollar Stores" in town. I'll be sure to check them out for those sets of miniature screwdrivers. And you're right, often I can never find a punch small enough to do the job I need to do.

    Thanks for the tip!!!

I just LOVE this forum!!! [:D]

Good morning 00scoots: Well what I did was: I got a 3/8 drive deep socket. The outside diameter of the tube is 1.025 inches. I then had it machined to get the 4 tabs to fit the tube. You don't need to get a real expensive one, one that was made in "China" works best because they are soft, and easy to machine. The 3/8 drive socket makes it real easy to use!
