Small of the back carry DANGEROUS??

I was in a rather large gun shop (I won't mention the name here) the other day, and told the guy at the pistol counter that I was looking for an IWB holster for a J-frame smith for small of the back carry....

He starts in telling me how dangerous it is to wear like that because if you fall, it'll surely break your spine and leave you crippled...

HUH?

Next thing, he was trying to pimp one of the blackhawk CQB holsters at me.

Anyone else ever heard of this??

It seems as if all the gun writers lately are promoting that thought.
I don't know if it will break your spine, but it sure as hell will hurt. I would slide it to the side so it is between your spine and your hip. About where your kidney is. That will hurt too. Maybe the best thing is, Don't fall.

I tried a small of the back holster for a little while, and they are uncomfortable unless you plan on standing all the time. There is no way to adjust it that isn't annoying when you are in a vehicle. I used it for maybe a week, then tossed it in the bin of stuff I regret buying.

I live mine for my 239. If you fall and the gun is on your hip you could break your hip! That would suck too. The second part of your question, about the Blackhawk holster. I have several Serpas and I love them. It's the only holster I've found that allows a good grip and easy draw and still has retention.

I've got a Taurus 605 (stainless 5 shot 357) that I occasionally carry in the small of my back. I like carrying a gun there, but I don't wear it centered. I wear it off to the side over my right hip. It's a lot more comfortable, and it rides almost directly above my hip pocket. That way if I need to draw it covertly, it just looks like I'm reaching for my wallet. As others have said Your Mileage May Vary.

As for the Serpa holsters, I love them. Only wish they had ones that would fit my some of my other pistols.

I had a bad habit of sticking my flashlight in the back of my pants while on duty. I wrestled with a perp one night and ended up falling with him on top of me. I truly believe that the only reason I did not get seriously hurt, back injury, was because I had on a bullet resistant vest.

I have looked at the sob holsters but never tried one. Don't know how I would like it but falling backwards with 180 pounds on top of you could cause some injury. Something to think about. Just depends on how much you get into in your everyday life. Most people would not have to worry about it much.

I will say that from an icident standpoint that it is not the best posistion for several reasons...uncomfortable, could get hurt, tough to sit down...however, the most important is it is just a bad location. It is the toughest to get the gun into action, and the spot where you have the least CONTROL of your weapon. Suppose sometime your shirt/jacket slipped up, and a perp seen your gun. Unsuspectingly he/she comes up behind you...your gun could be in their hands like real fast. Nothing you can do about it either.

Stopped a deputy I knew one day in the courthouse. He was in plain clothes, SOB holster. His suit jacket was hiked up, caught on his weapon, and without realizing it, was walking around with weapon exposed. Hard to see how your clothes hang back there.

A young LEO I had met was in line at a local grocery store, when an even younger and not-so-smart lady he new from somewhere noticed him and wanted to mess with him. She noticed the outline of a gun tucked SOB and grabbed it. She and he wrestled for control of the Glock 19 and he ended up taking a round in the spine/back.

If it comes down to a question of weapon retention or control, SOB is about the worst place to carry a gun.

Still not as bad as those idiots you see zipping down the road on crotch rockets while wearing a backpack. That's a good recipe for fractured vertebrae from even a simple spill.
