Ok we have determined that a shotgun is better. Question, in a house where you don't want over penetration I have been told buckshot is too big. Number 4 birdshot is what you should use. If you have to fire, the range would be feet not yards and the birdshot will still punch through but not as far as buckshot. Experts??

Read a story on Buckshot vs. Birdshot. 2 guys, Both armed with shotguns, One with birdshot, one with buckshot. Guy with the birshot shot first, blinded the other man, guy with the buck shot, fired back, killed the man, then executed him with a shot to the head, the guy who was blinded lived through the attack.

Dick Cheney couldn't kill an 85 year old guy with birdshot at close range to the face, neck, and chest, what makes you think it would take down a young, healthy, guy up to 25yards?

Buckshot or no shot. Its the best option, but your worry should be about how good of a shot you are when making the choice. A miss is going through at least one wall no matter what.

What Hollyweird screen play did you get this info from?

Maybe at a distance of 50 yards your senaro might be true, but at shotgun distances in a house (7 yards or less)the bird shot will be almost a solid slug.

Don't believe me? Set up your own test and give it a try.

Bird shot will penitrate TWO wet plaster / lath walls and still have enough energy to dispatch someone on the other side. You can ask my Grandmother (talk about an AD)

Several companies make a low velocity or "tactical" buckshot load designed for close quarters where overpenetration is a concern. I've read good things about the TAP ammo.

I have had to friends shot with a shotgun one with high brass 6 while he was duck hunting at a range of about 10-12 feet. Him and another man were in a boat jump shooting ducks he was in the front when they ran up on some ducks they both got up the other man swung threw him and shot him (the doctor dug the wad out of his but the shot pattern was around a foot at that range which suprised me I thought it would have been tighter) the doctor said he was very lucky because it would have killed him if some of the shot would have hit that artey in the leg. He told me that when he was shot that it felt like someone hit him and it rocked him but he still was able to shot the duck he was swinging on. He had alot of cloths on and is a big guy but the shot still went in him pretty good. The other friend was not some luck was trying to take apart a gun and it slipped of the table and shot him under the lower jaw two the pellets came out with enough force to go penetrate the 1/4 plywood ceiling it was 00 or 000 buck.

Number 4 shot should suffice if you keep your wits about you and hit the intruder a good solid one.

Of course, if he's decked out like Iron Man, you might want to fall back on that AR-50 you've been saving just for such an event.

Or to put it another way: most bad guys will not stick around after being hit by a .22 much less a 12-gauge shotgun regardless of the size of the pellets.

Yes, a fin-stabilized tungsten saboted dart with a polymer ballistic tip will kill Godzilla if he is of a mind to break in and boost your stereo, but chances are that ain't gonna happen.

If it's bigger than a .380 auto and you're a decent shot with it, that's about all you need.

I never had to prove it, but I always felt that a 20 gauge double loaded with 3" number 2 magnum would be adequate.
