How many rounds will it take to "shoot out" a chrome lined barrel?

I have a Chineese made SKS that someone has cut the end of the barrel off about three inches up from the gas tube.It is a real nice job but they did not take into account that the sight was in front of the cut,so I have no front sight.Does someone know of where I can get a new or used barrel?I picked this gun up real cheap but I realy cant use it with this short barrel. Thanks for any help[V]

I bought a Yogo sks about three years ago. I beleve it to ba a modle 59/66 because it has a grenade launcher. Unfourtunatly, the barrel is shot out and the gas diverter valve is corroded, so its a one shot wonder. I have been able to get a new GDV but am haveing trouble finding a barrel. I have found several, but I am unsure if i can buy any barrel or if I have to get a certain barrel for this rifle. Any advice will be apprecated.
    Thanks

Yugos are beefier than any other SKS, probably because they had to compensate for lower quality steel. There aren't a lot of replacement parts ads, & they don't indicate the country of origin; I suspect that all parts available are Chinese. While the barrel may thread into the receiver (& I'm not sure it will), the rest of the gas system may not be correctly aligned without some skilled gunsmithing.

Henry is right. I don't see getting into a project that may cost $200-300, to save a $150 rifle.

FWIW, surplusrifle.com has a lot of info on the SKS, including replacing the gas valve. Look over at the right column on this page for additional articles- http://www.surplusrifle.com/sks/index.asp Numrich (gunpartscorp.com) has barrels for $56 plus shipping- HOWEVER- this is not a do-it-yourself job (tools required, check of headspace, etc) Yeah- the Yugo was a bit beefier- used a hotter loaded cartridge than rest of Warsaw pact, and all had grenade launchers (which kick like hell)

Just for grins, you might try replacing the gas valve (relatively cheap), and see if the accuracy of a CLEAN barrel is something you can live with- these ARE carbines, and not long range sniper rifles.

i HAD ONE SIMILAR TO YOURS, FIRST TRY A LIGHTER RECOIL SPRING (ONE FROM A REM. 742/7400 WORKS WELL). I DID REPLACE THE BARREL WITH A CHINESE BARREL, BUT LIKE THE OTHER SAID IT'S MORE WORK THAN IT'S WORTH.

Hey thanks. Ill try that site to get a barrel, the reason im holding on to this one is that it has something carved into the buttstock in some langage I dont know. The barrel is eaten out, the bullets keyhole at 30 feet.
