If you were using oil hardening steel to make a locking block for a shotgun and drew it back, would the color purple make it too soft or too hard for the part?

You will have to decide for yourself what you want it to do. I would probably want it to be softer than the parts it works against. In other words have it suffer before it damages the frame of the gun, for example. Taking it to a full blue spring temper would give it a spring temper, least likely to break under load. Hope this helps.
