range of a shorter barrel

Hello all,
I have been looking for a lightweight or compact rifle in 308 or 260. Ruger has both the compact (16.5" bbl) and ultralight (20" bbl). What would be the range loss for the shorter of the two? I am not expecting more than 200 yrd shots.

Thnx

The velocity loss is the issue; you are facing about 100-125 FPS difference between the short and long barrel. At 200 yards there is little difference in impact point. The muzzle blast and noise from a 16.5 inch barrel with slow powders and heavy bullets can be "interesting".

Wear you head phones with the short barrels.

for 200yds,..any barrel will do. I would however not consider much of anything under 20" with the case capacity of the 308 or 260. MHO

    I have a Ruger ultra-lite in 308 winchester.Using my handloads, 50grs H380 with a 150gr bullet, I average 2870fps over a chrono. The shorter barrel doesn't seem to lose much with the 308.
