Need help on Model 92 win.

My freind just picked up a model 92 win.Need so information on it. First the serial # is 201xx what year was it made.It has a octogon barell around 24" marked on the bbl.is 38 wcf what cal.Also overall condition is about 85 to 90% most all of the blueing is still on it.The gun belonged to a family member of his wife's and they gave it to him. He would like to know what it might be worth and any other information on it thanks.

    38 wcf is a .38-40.

    It should be a "Model 1892", and it was manufactured in the year 1894 (making it a bonafide "Antique" per federal regulations). As Pearyw pointed out, 38 W.C.F. (Winchester Center Fire) is the original designation for the 38-40 cartridge.

    The 24-inch octagon barrel tells us that it is a standard Sporting Rifle. In order to give you a reasonably accurate value assessment, I will need to see clear (well lit) pictures of it. You can either post them here, or send them to me at Win1885@msn.com

    Sorry can't post pictures my freind was passing threw on his way back home. He just kinda wanted a ball park figure on it said he did't want to sell it ,cause I already tried and he said he was going to hang on to it for a while.
