keltec or new ruger .380?

Just trying to decide. I hear good and bad stories about the keltec and the ruger is new with no history yet. If anyone has shot the new ruger I would like to hear your opinion. Thanks

There are a couple of very good side by side comparisons, including shooting a bunch of rounds out of both, on the KTOG.ORG forum site. Given that the Ruger is a clone of the KelTec there are a lot of negative comments also but the reviews are pretty well unbiased.

Other than price and availability the only negative I have seen on the Ruger is that it really beats the brass up when ejecting, if you reload that may be a major consideration.

KelTec has been in the mousegun concealed carry business a long time, this is Rugers first venture into that area. I think anyone who thinks the new Ruger is going to be built like a tank and indestructable is going to be disappointed but, then again, your mileage may vary.

    I don't shoot .380 so I don't have a dog in this hunt.

I don't suppose you've thought about one of those bersa's have you? I had one of those and a Walther PPK/s, they both shot great. The Bersa was just a couple hundred bucks cheaper. Worth thinking about if you want a .380 anyway.

Walther86 is correct. I have both the PPK/S and the Bersa and I actually like the Bersa better. But, because of its long PP-like profile, it is not as concealable as the Kel Tecs, at least in the pocket.

I can tell you that I am awaitng a shipment of the new Rugers for sale in my shop, but they are slow getting them out. Keltec can't seem to keep up with demand. I am waiting on a shipment of those as well. I have sold alot of Kel-tecs and very few have come back with problems. The ones that have come back, I sent back to Kel-tec and they returned them in two weeks or less with the problem corrected. I have read the mixed reviews and can only speak about the Kel-tec. Ruger is supposed to be slightly higher in price than Kel-tec, but I know the customers are extremely happy with the Kel-tec for their money. The concealability is the biggest factor with most of the customers and reliable functioning seems to be there.

Thanks for the replies. I have thought of the bersa but I would like something lighter in weight. My back up gun now is a taurus 85 ultralite . Its not bad but its a little wide due to the cylinder. And off duty I can't just put it in my pocket and be comfortable.

I have carried the Kel Tec in .380 for three years.
During this time, I have run 200 plus round through it for practice with no problems.

I don't know how set you are on a .380, but I saw a guy stash a kahr in his pocket the other day pretty easy. I have a glock 26 I keep in my pocket. Just fyi...

ginger49023: Hey thanks for that information. I have wanted a "pocket pistol" for some time and only Kel Tec seems to make one in 9mm that fills the bill. I looked at Taurus but the slides are a bit wide for being a "pocket pistol." I thought about the new Ruger but I already have .380s (still might look at the Ruger). I have looked at the Kahr PM9 and it fills the bill but costs quite a bit more than the Kel Tec. All I need to know is that the Kel Tec P-11 is reliable and you have answered my question. Thanks!

allaboutguns: Roughly how long does it take to get a Kel Tec in once ordered? I am hoping to buy either the Kahr or Kel Tec this summer.

I have a Keltec P3AT and love the damn thing. My biggest problem is that it is so small that I forget to take it out of my pocket or lose the dang thing. I put it on a shelf and a piece of paper was put on it...couldn't find it for a week. Now I have it down and can usually find it...kind of like car keys, put in one place each time.

Mouse gun it is...I have put 3 boxes through it and have had no feed problems. That is all you can ask from a belly gun. Of course I haven't had a chance at the Ruger yet....
