What would I have to go through if I wanted to own on of these??

The problem is not getting one. I have already found one what I think to be a very nice Les Baur (that has been converted) for next to nothing.

I would suggest contacting your ATF office and following their instructions. Or else contact a federally licensed class III dealer in your area and look for their guidance. Its a lenghty process and it is attainable providing all the paperwork is correct and properly scrutinized.

    Not really alot.

You will need to get Form 1 (I think) signed by a chief law enforcement officer (or set up a corp or LLC) and submit it to ATF for approval along with a check for $200.00, once that is done, dig deep in your pocket for about $12,000 to pay for a good class 3 M-16 or AR-15 clone. You'll also want to spend at least $400-$500 more for ammo for the first day's outing. Your class 3 dealer will walk you through the process step by step.

I had one, but decided I couldn't afford to shoot it. I now have a DPMS semi automatic AR-15 clone in its place and a pile of cartridges.

Here is a site that can answer most of your questions.

If the AR in question has been converted and never registered you or the current owner are looking at some serious consequences. This almost sounds like a case of RUN AWAY FAST.....If it was made after May 1986 it is illegal and if made before that date and not registered...illegal.

Les Baer didn't make AR's in 1986. You would not be able to own anything made after 1986 unless you are a dealer, or you are law enforcement and this is a duty weapon owned by your department.

Well fellas I hate it but I guess I am gonna have to let this piece go. I am kinda sad because it is really a nice gun but I cant deal with a felony and 10 years in pin. [xx(][:(][V]

the only other possible way around this, is if it is a pre May 1986 lower that has been registered, that was not made by Les Baer, with one of his uppers. I seriously doubt that something registered would carry an LB upper.

I just called and talked to the guy and he said that it was one of his "prized possesions" so I dont think it is registered.

B Mc- his "prized possessions" will probably be a spare carton of cigarettes, and a toothbrush with a sharpened handle. They could come in real handly in Federal prison. The guys have told you the straight poop- full auto, not already MADE and REGISTERED by May 1986- Run and run, as fast as you can. The prime indicator seems to be that if the seller does not want the purchase price of a nice car for the gun, it probably ain't legit. When the May '86 cutoff date came up, prices passed the roof, and headed for the clouds!
