I would like to know who makes a great barrel for 1911s. It will be going into a Springfield Armory GI model. 5 inch full size 1911. The application will be for target shooting out to 10-25 yards max. But i would like this barrel to have a potential accuracy out to 50 With some hard work and good recipes. Thanks in advance.

Anyone know what the proof marks "FG" and "SW" stand for on WWII era 1911 barrels? I have two Remington Rand slides with barrels marked with above.

Whats next? A ban on automatic transmissions?

Hello most of the shooters Like one of two brands of barrels for N.R.A. Bulls-eye guns and DCM/CMP match pistols We shoot at a 3 inch diameter 10 ring one handed at 50 yards. Most people like Kart barrels for lead bullets and BARSTO for jacketed bullets . The big thing is to FIT the barrel to the Slide and fit the slide to the frame and then a good match grade 1911 Pistol is capable of shooting 1&1/2 inch 10 shot groups at 50 yards from a rest. NOTE there are NO DROP IN BARRELS that will give you match grade groups. it takes a complete rework of ANY AND ALL parts to BUILD a MATCH GRADE 1911. type pistol . Cheers Karl

Thanks. I understand that i will need to fit the barrel to the Slide. this brings another questions. The the potential accuracy of the gun rise with a bull barrel fitted to the slide? Or will a standard barrel, and Barrel bushing fitted to the slide? Whis will work better. Thanks again

Been there, done that.....but that was a looooooong time ago! [:D]

I'd go with the bushing. After enough rounds, the bushing/barrel interface will loosen. Switching to a smaller bushing is a lot cheaper than replacing a slide & barrel.

Best barrel for the money is Kart. It would need to be fitted by someone who knows what they are doing.

    Pearyw,

Konamtbiker is a Gunsmith-in-Training and is attending gunsmithing school. If he isn't qualified yet, he will be shortly.

I have used the Kart barrels with good performance and Bar-Sto of course but I still have a couple of Colt National Match barrels which I like better than most especially when I'm using bushings.

Like a rifle, the 1911 is a system and all the parts need to be fitted and the geometry correct for it to be accurate. Then the shooter needs to be on top of his or her game also.

    Have fun with your project!

    Best.

Sorry to use up another post but EDIT does not show up. I have a VERY GOOD 8&1/2 by 11 magazine size booklet on building a match 1911 That I used along with watching The pistol-smiths at Quantico marine marksman ship unit as well as other tool and die makers and Pistol smiths. The older National match barrels are very good the drawing number on N.M. barrels should be NM7791414 and the latest NM Slide should be NM7791435. The one thing that the Kart and Barsto barrels have going for them is not only are the HOOD and BOTTOM locking lugs OVERSIZE for fitting The TOP locking lugs are one High and one Low this gives you a chance to use a file with save edges on 2 sides to fit the top lug So the firing pin will fit in the center of primer and the use of standard link long links that used to be to only way will in some pistols cause feed problems and offset firing pin strike. I can try to copy booklet and send a copy and contact me if you want to know where you can buy National Match Barrels and Slides and Sights on my profile. Sorry I did not know you were Pistol Smith in training. We need more match pistol builders most have a 1 year waiting list.Bull barrels are IMHO NOT THE WAY TO GO "PRAISE THE HARD-BALL GUN"
