Need some info. on this 44 Mag. 6.5" : serial # s178776 w/ y-7 & a 5 encircled near by the s. number. (proof marks) ? If the screw on the bottom frnt. of the grip counts I would call it a five screw mod. on the crane it is marked 79968 H O .
Gen. cond. I would call 90-95%; holster wear on end of barrell, TH,TT,TS & Herret custom grips came with it. Looking for a value & year of mfg. Thanks

Sounds like you've got one of the last of the 44 Magnum production before S&W went to the Model 29 at serial number S179000 in 1957. The screw count comes from the sideplate and the front of the trigger guard. Yours probably has three screws on the sideplate plus the one in the front of the trigger guard. Pictures would help on value but maybe in the $600 to $800 range.

Not to say you won't get the info you're looking for here but you might want to take this to www.smith-wessonforum.com as well.

I've got one in 99% condition, SN 177XXX. Diamond grips, 4 screw, 6.5" bbl. Have been offered $900, Blue Book says a touch more. Depends on the buyer and what the market will bear.
