i am having a custom rifle built and im at a caliber crossroads! im debating on 270 or 30.06! this particular rifle will be designated for hunting and target shooting! i have studied the bolistics of each round and thought i would leave this decision in the very capable experience of the experts! thanks!

Bullet choice goes to the 30cal
Other than that, flip a coin (no matter which one you chose, 1/2 the people will agree with your choice, and 1/2 will ay you should have gone the other way)

If you are building a custom rifle then, IMHO you should go with a custom cartridge as well. If you like the '06 type cartridges, you should look into the the 6.5-06. Better ballistics than both the .270 and 30-06.
If you don't reload, then I agree with savage170. Go with the .280.

I personally wold chose a 30 cal area.
easier to find bullets and all that cheaper brass (30-06 & 308 military brass). I have an '06 and it has never let me down.
Have fun and post a pic of the newly custom rifle

I've always wondered how it was folks in the late 1800, 1840s and such managed to kill deer and bear and elk with .36 or .45 caliber muzzle loading rifles while we in the modern era require 338s and 375s. Personally, with proper shot placement I think there is very little out there that can not be taken with a 30.06 rifle.

If you look at the Ballistics using bullets of the same weight, and same style(boat tail vs. boat tail, and plastic tipped vs. plastic tipped), you will see that the 30-06 will do everything the 270 will do plus some. Since the good old 30-06 can be loaded with everything from 100 grain to 250 grain bullets, I am saying the 30-06 would be my choice. It is just plain more versatile, and you see it on the firing line of matches a lot more than you do a 270, and there is a reason for that. My opinion...30-06 all the way.

You can't go wrong with either round. You understand, of course, that if you ever decide to sell it, you'll never get back what you put into it. We do these things because we have to and they make us happy, not because they make economic sense. That said, if you do decide to sell one day, the farther away you are from a standard cal. like the 2 you suggest, the less likely that you'll get what you want for a price. The odd calibers tend to sit on the shelf longer, waiting for that one person who has to have a 29X75 AckleyGibbs Vaporizer and when that person doesn't show, some fool like me buys 'em on the cheap cuz I like nice, odd stuff.

I've always been curious about the 270,but if I were building a rifle I believe I'd go 30-06

While bullet selection goes to the 30-06,..I don't think either is anything but bland. Either will do most anything on North America. I would do something like a 280 ackely improved or a 6.5-06 or 6.5-06IMP etc. I simply like wildcats,...no real scientific reasoning though.
