Mossberg 9200 scary problem

My uncle brought over my cousin for me to take turkey hunting last night, and a Mossberg 9200 autoloader that he's had for several years that he says has been jamming. In fact, it had a shell stuck in it (already fired) when he came over.

I took the gun down, and beat the shell out. I threw it in the trunk of the car this morning, and after hunting I threw in a cheap dove load and this happened:

The bolt is off it's "track" to the right slightly (looking down on the top of the gun) and it's turned down.

I got this shell out, and to my amazement, it had grown.

It seems like it's actually pulled the "brass" almost completely off the shell and the back of the shell is bowed out.

Any ideas as to what is causing this??

FRom what I see if this had been a magnum turkey load You would not be posting this Question/but be in the hospital or worst. . Any time I had to beat a shell out of a gun I would Fix the gun before I ever shot it again . I think your trouble started out with a RUSTED chamber but no telling what you have ended up with now I would take to a gunsmith and let him look at it .IMHO this is beyond the DIY home fix.

Your other alternative is to GET RID OF THE MOSSBERG!!!!! I am not a big fan of them, especially the 9200

i agree get rid of it! mossbergs are and always have been pieces of junk IMHO! you would do well to buy a remington model 1100! keep the gas system clean and you have zero problems! best

Ok. It's not my gun. It's my uncle's.

Think maybe sending it to mossberg might have some luck?

Unless your uncle is the original owner, I doubt Mossberg will be much help and will be more expensive than a regular gunsmith.

I dont know what happened, but the 9200 is not a great design. Lots of issues with breakages on these. I would rather have a Winchester 1400, and thats saying something. Onyl Mossberg Auto I have is a 1000, which is really a S&W, which is really a Howa.

You should find a knowledgeable gunsmith. I would guess the problem involves a dirty chamber, gas system, and maybe the locking area/lug recess in the barrel extension. I have one of the 9200's that has been kept clean and it functions 100% with everything except the AA low recoil loads.

First thing this is not the guns fault. That particular ammo is fooey so to speak. I had a box of identicle shells my mossberg 500 had them do the same. The action would not open so i took the barrel off. DO NOT ever buy these winchester silver low aluminum they suck out right.

Never had a problem with these low cost bulk loads in any of my guns. Even my cheap ones. I still think its a nasty chamber like others have said.

chamber issue would be a rare occurance but do tell us if this is the first time or is it only with the ammo you used. I would say based on previous experience this is an ammo issue.

This should close the topic, but the shell that was in the gun when it was brought to me was a Winchester AA handicap load. (Factory loaded)
