mounting scope on 30 40 Krag

I have a Krag that has a scope mounted on it. It is a somewhat stange way to mount it in my opinion. The scope sits in the eleven oclock position in relation to the barrel. Is this the only way to mount a scope on a Krag? I would like to move the scope above the barrel, but I dont know if its possible because it appears it would interfere with the spent cartridges as they eject. Any advice you can give me would be appreciated.

You selected the 'thumbnail' view so I changed it for you so we could see it better.

    Probably to clear top ejection.
    What make is the mount?
If it is a Williams, I think they still make HCO - High Center Overbore - rings that might let the empties clear.

It is in fact a williams. So they make a sepeerate mount? Or something that connects on this exsiting mount?

I got inspired one day, milled off most of the front sight, drilled and tap, and put on a Weaver base and a red dot scope. It is strong enough though that you could mount a Scout scope.

You'd have to alter the bolt.
A red dot in place of the rear sight might be practical if you want to chop up this rifle.

I dont have intentions of radical altering of the gun. It has been sporterized allready because of the drill holes for the existing scope, so I ve been told its monetary value has plummeted. But it is exactly how it came down from my grand dad and so I like it the way it is.Except possibly putting another scope on it.
