is my 30 40 kraig carbine considered an antique?

Hi, looking over the questions and answers I'm wondering about listing my 30 40 carbine, however I am not an ffl holder. Can these guns be shipped as antiques or will it need to be sent to an ffl holder?
Thanks for any help...Al

What is the serial number on your Carbine?

Many of the Springfield Krags are "Antique" (pre-1899 manufacture), but a lot more of them are not.

Hi Bert, thanks for the quick reply!
The serial number on the side is 78466. I have a couple pics of it I just uploaded to the web. The markings on it say
US SPRINGFIELD ARMORY MODEL 1896 78466

It was my girlfriends grandfathers gun, her father sold it to me back in 1999. From what research I did I notice it is missing a 'saddle ring'? on the side and someone added a recoil pad at some point. Without the recoil pad it is 40" overall length. The sight has a 'C' on it I'm told stood for carbine but another fella who wants it said it is more than likely a cut down rifle? How does one tell?
It shoots great I've used it deer hunting as did her father back in the day, but the shipping as an antique I question as it does take a centerfire cartridge?

Your Krag was manufactured in 1897 so it definitely qualifies as an "antique" and does not need to go through an FFL in most places.

NOTE: Some localities such as NY City, Washington, DC and New Jersey do require that any firearm, including blackpowder, be shipped to an FFL so be sure your buyer knows their local laws.

Yes, the "C" indicates a carbine rear sight and is a Model 1896 sight. The barrel looks like a carbine barrel but measure it from the muzzle to the breech: it should measure 22".

The fore-end looks slightly chopped from your pics but it still could be a carbine stock since it does have a plate where the sling bar would be. Your barrel band is from a rifle as a carbine band has a raised "hump" to protect the rear sight when sliding it into a scabbard. Also, it has a sling swivel which carbine bands did not have. The rear swivel was added as a rifle would have it on the trigger guard. The top handguard should measure 7".

It looks like someone replaced the original buttplate with a rubber one. The original is steel with a slightly curved toe and a trapdoor that holds a 3-piece cleaning rod.

I think it's a genuine carbine with some modifications made to it but it would take a hands-on inspection to know for sure. I hope this helps.

    Hi Spider7115

The barrel does measure 22" and the top wood 7".

Thanks for the info on shipping to certain areas. I'm in upstate NY pretty rural area. The fella who wanted it lives nearby but strikes me as a 'shyster' lol, so he can bid right along with anyone else.

I'll list it as a carbine with a (?) question mark and include your infor about the front band, ect.

Thankyou again I appreciate the information.
I have several other older muzzle loaders that were my dads as well as an old winchester barrel/receiver I picked up along time ago at an auction. If I look them up would this be the apropriate place to post & ask for info on them?

Even if it were a modern gun, you could ship any long gun to any FFL holder or in many cases Curio and Relics holder... you yourself don't need an FFL to do this.

Hi, Al - Yes, this is normally a pretty place to be (I'm in the Catskills) but we just got over 24" of snow and are literally socked in!

I'm glad we could help and look forward to your auction. Be sure to get some better, clearer pics, particularly of the forearm including the underside. Give all of the measurements I gave you as well as these are things collectors will be wanting to know.

Yes, this is the place to ask about any firearms you may have so please allow us the chance to help you.

By the way, just call me "Spider". 7115 was my mother's maiden name. [;)]
