So I just won a PTR-91 on GB, its my first .308/7.62 nato rifle. I don't know much of anything about .308 so I am looking for recomondations on economical ammunition good functioning ammunition.

is this rifle particular in its appetite or does it function on most anything...thanks!

Is Silver Bear or Brown Bear nasty stuff to shoot?

Its an 18" barrel, and the barrels are made by Thompson(as I understand it)

alright I'll try some of the surplus stuff, there's some FN Belgium surplus $199 for 500 rounds at AIM right now, seems pretty economical to me...gonna try a box at a time of each brand and see how they go before I buy bulk

Thanks for the advice, I'll try the 140-147 gr stuff for now. Once it gets here!!!

Find out what yours likes before you buy too much of anything - they can be a little picky.

I have only had mine for a little while, but I have had excellent results with Magtech ammo. Use Fiocci ammo and I suddenly have a single shot rifle.

I haven't run any surplus through it yet.

I would start off with some good quality 168 FMJ - brass case, brass bullet jacket. The Bear stuff is I presume Russian and is probably dirty as hell and steel jacketed. It's not terrible stuff, but it's probably not going to give best accuracy.

The PTR is a well made gun and it should go "bang" with about anything. But while you're breaking it in I'd say go with what's most likely to give you any problems, that way if you have a poblem you can isolate it and not have to worry about whether it's the ammo. For example, if you started off with steel cased and had an extractor problem my bet is someone would ask "are you using steel cased ammo" right?

My suggestion is break it in with good stuff, establish that it works well then fiddle around with getting better accuracy or better value.

Edit - oops, right on the 147. Wandering mind. [V]

huh? All NATO spec 7.62mm ammo is 147/150gr.

To the OP, if you got one of the "K" rifles which is the 16" with the short HK33 length handguards, prepare yourself for heartache.

Any 7.62mm HK type, should run on steel case, brass case, literally anything.

Unfortunately, PTR, in their infinite cheapness, had someone make their barrels, who Wire EDM'd the flutes in the chambers which are not only too short, but too shallow to ensure proper extraction.

I've had words, at length, with these folks at SHOT show, because they continue to contend that the Emperor has clothes.

On their propaganda-laden website they contend that South African (???!!!) is unsuitable for their "match chambered" barrels. UTTER BS.

I've angrily and flatly stated "I was building G3 clones (that worked!) before anyone ever heard of PTR, JLD or whatever you're calling yourselves this year." so I know what I speak of when I say there's a VISUAL and DEMONSTRABLE difference in GOOD chamber flutes and BAD chamber flutes.

I've built guns on POF, FMP, EBO, Contract, Turk, German etc... bbls and they all run ANYTHING if properly headspaced.

Most of the PTR91Ks will run on brass cased American Eagle ONLY, and some not reliable on that!

Shameful and duplicitous way to do business, rather than just "bite the bullet" and take the financial hit on making these things right to engage in disinformation campaigns like Century to make excuses for an inferior product.

Sickened. It's a shame because their receivers, US fire control parts and indeed everything they sell is top quality. Someone at the top made a bad decision and has ordered the rest of the herd there to "go along or get out", and so they are condemned to repeat a demonstrable lie.

i would start with surplus. my hk91 would shoot guatimalin 147 gr ball the same as 168 gr federal GM. i shot some 180s and the group opened up like 4 fold
it is meant for the lighter bullets unless they changed the twist
