What is the significance of the Colt 1851s and 1860s in the Black Box.I see some on GB that are in different boxes. I saw some at t Gun show this weekend in a larger Black box. Are really exactly like the originals?

Altho early 2nd generation Colt blackpowder revolvers came in light brown boxes, most second generation Colts (early 1970's to early 1980's) came in a black box with foam inserts. When I see "black box" Colt I know I am dealing with a second generation percussion gun. I believe the 2nd and 3rd generation Colts are like the originals exept in a few ways not noticable to most people. I believe the screws on the 2nd generations are metric (frames were cast and some machining done overseas, but were final fit, finished and assembled here in the US), not sure if the 3rd generation have metric or english screws. Also, the originals (1st generation) had "gain twist" rifling where the rifling started out slow at the cylinder end and the rate increased towards the muzzle. The 2nd and 3rd generation guns have normal twist.

Thank you. I would assume that the frames were cast on the originals ( 1st generation) ? Are parts interchangeable between all years?

The black boxes were used for the "F" series 1851 Navy revolvers made from 1980-1982 as opposed to the earlier "C" series.
