Wanted to know if a pistol with serial number of 99xx would be pre 1898 production. Looks sort of like Model 43 with no trigger guard (never had one), markings are very worn so no real help. Can notfind any info based upon serial number and production date. Thanks.

You need to post pics and/or have a positive ID on the gun in question. Serial number alone has NOTHING to do with DOM. I had a rifle a few years back that was #004 and it was made in 1993........

What I want to find is a serial number book like is available for Winchesters, Colts and many other makes or a good list of pre 1898 firearms with the serial numbers listed for various models. Thanks for the interest.

Try Cornell Publications. Also, BATFE has a list of C&R sn's

Stevens serial numbers were a mixed bag. There is no reference to my knowledge that lists serial numbers and the dated associated.
At best the model of the pistol will give you a range of dates that that model was produced. Most if not all the Stevens pistols were mfg. after 1898!

According to the information I have gotten, Stevens did not make a pistol, single shot or other, before 1907.

That came from the most recent Blue Book, and we all know, not all of the data in there is correct.

My references show the Stevens Number 35 Offhand Model single shot (tip up style) as being made 1907- 1939, but being similar to the EARLIER "Gould" model- so they DID make pistols before 1907- BUT- if you cannot show that the particular pistol in question was made before 1899, it will not legally be an antique. Stevens became part fo Savage in 1936, so do not think you will have much luck with company records. As far as BATFE, there are certain specific firearms that are named as C&Rs, and THOSE guns ONLY are listed by serial number.
