SKS conversion

My father bought me an old Chinese "Paratrooper" model SKS with the 20round fixed mag. My fiend told me that is was possible to convert that so it will accept AK mags. Well I was talking to a guy at a gun store when I was buying my Shotgun, and he said that is very difficult next to immpossible to do. So I am asking anyone who knows about this if they could tell me if it is possible and if so how difficult and where can I get the parts.

The modification would be illegal as creating a banned assault weapon is not legal unless the Assault Weapons Ban expires in September of 2004.
The problem you are having with the magazines that detach from a sks with no modifications is the bolt. Those magazines are pre-ban AK mags and were converted for the sks by welding the adapter on. You need to narrow the bottom of the bolt to get it to feed correctly 100% of the time. It is a simple job requiring a dremel and a few minutes of your time.

Firstly, the SKS magwell is narrower than the AK so it requires relieving the area around the magwell on the receiver which is a little more involved.
Secondly, the bolt can be machined to SKS-M specs to allow one-handed mag changes on a closed bolt. Just don't machine past those dimensions or you can crack the bolt when used a bit.

It's easy to do if you have a dremel and a welder. The instructions are readily available for free on the net.

I'm interested in the bolt mod to allow the detatch sks mags to feed in the fixed well modeels I have one of the early preban models and had purchased a pair of the detatch mags for it and it wouldn't feed more than about 3 -4 rds b/4 sticking[V] was very frustrating I sent 'em back. Machining the bolt doesn't make gun cycle easier or keep the bolt from sticking. It only allows a detachable mag to be removed/installed without the bolt needing to be locked back. The bolt has a "rail" on the sides along the bottom edge that normally run under the feed lips on the mag when the mag (either fixed or detachable) is in place. Machining the "rails" off and tapering the lower face slightly allows the mags to be removed without the bolt catching on the feed lips. The SKS-D/M comes this way from the factory and occasionally you can find a bolt for one to swap in, which may be a better idea if you aren't comfortable cutting on the bolt.
quote:With this conversion, do you loose the last round bolt hold open feature of the SKS since the AK mags don't have a trip for the bolt stop?
Yep, the bolt stop feature doesn't work on the conversions usually. The AK mag isn't set-up to engage a bolt latch so unless one was somehow added to the mag or the bolt catch was heavily re-engineered you wouldn't have a hold open function. The SKS-M/D don't have the catch or provision for one either[B)]

I'm out on the whole process ... as well as the SKS-M/D ... if I want something that takes AK mags, doesn't have a bolt hold-open feature, I'll just use an AK ... or my SW32 ... HK style rifle that shoots 7.62 X39 and takes AK mags ... they are going to paint this week and shipping next week!
