Cast bullet thru a steel plate

I shot a cast lead bullet throught a quarter inch thick steel plate. This surprised me. I have some steel plate swinging targets I made. I shoot at them using my 30-30 all the time and no big deal. I shot one using my 30-06 with accellerator loads I made with 60 gr. cast lead round nose bullets at about 3800 fps. I had the plate out at 100 yards and now it has a permanent three shot group of holes burned right through it. I did not dent the plate just holed it and the hole is much bigger than .22 cal. more like .30 cal.

So whats the question? Hyper velocity loads like that can do it easily, especially if its a soft steel.

Hello I don't think there is a question but I for one am very glad you gave this post to all of us . It will show what a small bullet will do and a real eye opener because of the fact it is NOT A JACKETED BULLET but a cast lead bullet. most people don't consider lead to be armor defeating

    Wolf,
He said he was using accellerator rounds, they are smaller calibre projectiles with plastic bushings covering them to make contact with the 30 cal rifling.

Thanks, Cap. I'm not familiar with "accellerator" rounds as a term. I know them as "sabot" rounds. I thought he was talking about an increased loading. Thanks for letting me know.

It's the velocity. You can drive a marshmallow through an anvil with high enough velocity.

The Accelerator is basically a 30 caliber sabot for a 22 cal projectile. If you think that is hot, the barnes x bullets in 243 diameter and up will easily punch 1/2 inch boiler plate. The 30 cal 180 grain XLC out of a 300 Win Mag will drill a hole in 3/4 boiler plate like you drilled it on a drill press.

"It's the velocity. You can drive a marshmallow through an anvil with high enough velocity."... FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE, LEAD WILL CUT STEEL AT ABOUT 2000 F.P.S. (FROM MY OLD SILHOUETTE SHOOTING DAYS)

The marshmallow comment made me laugh [:)]. I remember from my aerospace consulting days someone would inevitably comment, "Yeah, but will it fly?" The answer was always, "Hell, you can make a brick fly if you get it going fast enough!"

Think of a projectile traveling at that speed and contacting the plate as a blow torch. The lead becomes so hot that it actually "burns" through the steel. Kinda like an anti-tank round.
    Physics be so kewl.[8D]
