I would like to get this gun back to original. does anybody know what the original grips were? Thanks

Probably checkered walnut with the Colt medallion.

Many years ago I owned a early 50's production 9mm Commander. I believe it came with plastic grips that was made from a material known as "Coltwood". How long Colt used this material for their pistols, I don't know? I would guess the standard grips for the commander your inquiring about, would depend on it's vintage.
